Glenn Gilmour • 1938-2011

A native of Ontario, Canada, Mr. Gilmour began his dance training under the guidance of Celia Franca and Betty Oliphant at Canada’s National Ballet School. He furthered his training in New York and London, England, studying with such noted teachers as Anthony Tudor, Leon Danielian, Marie Fay and Stanislav Idzikowsky.
A former Principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada, Mr. Gilmour also danced as a soloist with the London Ballet and Ballet Rambert. During his twelve year dancing career he worked with such noted choreographers as Erik Bruhn, John Cranko, Celia Franca, David Adams and Grant Strate to name a few. His many performances interpreted works by Sir Fredrick Aston, George Balanchine, Auguste Bournonville, Ninette de Valois, Michel Fokine, Sir Kenneth McMillan, Marius Petipa, Ray Powell, Frank Staff and Anthony Tudor.
Upon retiring from the National Ballet Company in 1970, he trained as a teacher at the National Ballet School and joined the staff in 1972. Along with his teaching position at the National Ballet School he has taught at Ryerson Dance and Theatre School in Toronto, The Royal Swedish Ballet School, Ballet Entre-Six in Montreal, Quebec, The Royal Danish Ballet School and Company, Arts Umbrella in Vancouver B.C. and numerous summer schools throughout Canada.
In 1978 he became a Fellow and Examiner for the Imperial Cecchetti Society of Teachers of Dance. In addition to teaching , Mr. Gilmour was a sought after choreographer who has provided many pieces for the National Ballet School, Ballet Y’s, The Royal Swedish Ballet, Arts Umbrella and The Edmonton Festival Ballet.
For over 40 years… Mr. Gilmour has taught and inspired countless male and female dancers and teachers – worldwide.
